COASTAL CAROLINA OVERVIEW • Coastal Carolina is led by 23rd-year head coach Gary Gilmore. • The Chanticleers won two games at Georgia Southern last weekend. They are hitting .294 and have a 4.03 ERA and .971 fielding percentage. • Parker Chavers (.327), Cory Wood (.317), Seth Lancaster (.313) and Lee Sponseller (.311) are all hitting at least .300 in 2018. QUICK HITS • Lee Sponseller hit a walkoff grand slam to lift Coastal Carolina to a 9-5 win over Clemson at Conway, S.C., on March 20. • Tuesday's game marks the first time since 2005 that Clemson and Coastal Carolina play multiple times during the regular season. • The 2018 season marks the third straight year Clemson has 21+ wins at the midway point of the regular season (21 in 2016, 23 in 2017). MARR HAVING STRONG FRESHMAN YEAR • Redshirt freshman righthander Travis Marr has been one of the team's top long relievers in his second season in the program in 2018. • He is 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA, .279 opponents' batting average and 19 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched over nine appearances (one start). • He has registered a win in each of his last three appearances and has not allowed a home run in 2018. • In his last six appearances, he is 3-0 and has allowed just 12 hits and two runs (1.17 ERA) with 12 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched. • He is holding opponents to 0-for-8 with four strikeouts against no walks with the bases loaded. • He has allowed just seven hits and one run (0.71 ERA) in 12.2 innings pitched after the fifth inning. • In his career, he is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 21 strikeouts against eight walks in 24.2 innings pitched over 10 appearances (one start). THREE TIGERS IN THE MAJORS IN 2018 • Former Tigers Daniel Gossett, Brad Miller and Tony Sipp have all played at least one MLB game in 2018. • Gossett is in his second season, Miller is in his sixth season and Sipp is in his 10th season. • Gossett, who had a 23-9 career record at Clemson, made his major league debut with the Oakland Athletics in 2017. • Miller, the 2011 ACC Player-of-the-Year, hit .339 with 36 doubles, eight triples, 16 homers, 135 RBIs and 46 steals in 191 games as a Tiger. • Sipp batted .280 and had a 2-2 pitching record for the Tigers in 2004. • Every Tiger team from 1974 to 2014 has had at least one future major leaguer on its roster. |
