OFFICIAL ACC TOURNEY THREAD: CLEMSON vs #7 Louisville

CUTrevor 2019-05-23 07:06:29

Mat Clark will presumably get the start at 11:00 this morning. It’s a meaningless game as far as the ACC Tournament is concerned because the Tigers were mathematically eliminated in their 11-inning loss to BC on Tuesday, and for good measure BC went ahead and beat Louisville to eliminate the No.1 seed. However, some think the Tigers need to win this game in order to assure themselves of an NCAA bid. They are right on the bubble, and losing their last 3 games would not help their cause at all. Personally, I think if they win they are in, and if they lose it’s 50/50. The Tigers have been in contention for a top-8 national seed all 3 years under Monte Lee, but this year they are fighting for their lives.

Grayson Byrd, the Tigers’ leader in average, HR’s and RBI’s, was 0-6 with 3 K’s on Tuesday. If he had a typical game, the Tigers probably win.

The Tigers will have their work cut out for them on Thursday against Reid Detmers, who was named ACC Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in wins, ERA and strike outs. The Tigers managed to score 5 runs in 6 innings against Detmers, however, in their 5-1 win over the Cardinals in the first game of their regular season weekend series. Detmers struck out 10 that night in his 6 innings pitched.

As I expected, Mat Clark will indeed get the start. He looked the best he has in weeks last Thursday when he went 6.2 innings, allowing just 4 hits and no earned runs against Wake, one of the best offenses in the nation. The Tigers won that game 4-3.

The hot Michael Green will leadoff again, and Jordan Greene will start at 2nd after pinch hitting on Tuesday and reaching base 3 times.

Clark goes 1-2-3 on 9 pitches! Great start. Dan McDonald has already broken out his small ball, trying for a bunt single with one out. Tigers MUST play good defense with no errors because the Cards will turn errors into runs like nobody else.

SCORELESS AFTER ONE.

Davidson walks! Bases juiced with one out for Byrd, who doubled in his first at bat! He had bases loaded yesterday and flied out to end the inning. A sac fly here would be nice. Anything but a K or double play.

Hall singles! Good to see him get a hit. 2 on with one out for Justin Hawkins. I’m bunting here if I’m Monte. Good speed on the bases, and Hawkins struck out last time. A 2-out single would score 2.

Green strikes out looking on full count. Tigers have already hung 5 runs on the ACC’s ERA leader! As I’ve said, though, offense has not been the problem this season. It’s been pitching, walks and errors.

Good grief Clark gives up a HR on the first pitch of the 9th! Perfect game, no-hitter and shutout all go by the wayside with 5 outs to go. Painful! Monte is leaving him in to see if he can get the complete game. He's only at 82 pitches.

Hennessy comes in to close it. Shame that Clark couldn't at least get the complete game, but it was a hell of a performance against the No.7 team in the nation! If he can repeat that in the NCAA Regional, the Tigers could do some damage.

Hennessy gets a K swinging on 3 pitches and a grounder to end the game!

TIGERS WIN 7-1!!!

It's a crying shame that Mat Clark was just 5 outs away from perfection and didn't even come away with a shutout or a complete game, but what a performance! He went head-to-head with the ACC Pitcher of the Year and stole the show. That bodes very well for the Tigers, who have played their way into the NCAA Tournament in my opinion. That's 3 wins in 4 games against No.7 Louisville, and they should have won all 4. Had a chance to win with a sac bunt in the 9th but lost in 11 innings on Sunday in Clemson.

Wilkie had a big game with a double, HR and 3 RBI's--all with 2 outs. I expect the Tigers to be a 3 seed, perhaps in Athens. Be sure to tune in here on Monday because I'll have the news from the Selection Show posted right here!

I'll have the post-game press conference and highlights posted in a bit!
