NFL WATCH: Who stays, who goes?

This is the time of year after the playoff that we have become accustomed to every year for announcements from Clemson players on whether they will forego eligibility to enter the NFL Draft. Last year, it was Mullen and Lamar. The deadline to declare for the draft is Friday.

Simmons will definitely leave and presumably Higgins and Etienne. I would be more surprised if Higgins comes back than Etienne. I would give Etienne about a 20% chance of returning as a borderline 1st rounder with a loaded RB class. He said last night that he will talk it over with his family. Higgins will likely be a 1st rounder. Amari Rodgers said a month ago that he will declare for the NFL early, but maybe that changes with the disappointing loss and his low production in the two playoff games. Skalski has said he will definitely return. AJ Terrell will be an interesting one to watch. Before last night’s game, I would have said he would definitely go pro, but his draft stock might have taken a hit after getting burned so bad by Chase. I would say it’s 50/50 for him now. Finally, Nyles Pinckney has graduated but has one more year of eligibility. I would expect him to return to improve his draft stock--especially after having to sit out the National Championship Game.

Chase Brice will also have a decision to make in the coming weeks. Not about the NFL but about whether to transfer. Many have assumed that he will leave with Trevor coming back next year and DJ the heir apparent for 2021, but I’m not so sure Brice leaves. He loves Clemson as much as anyone on the team, and he’s a competitor. He will be the starter if Trevor gets hurt next year, and he might think he might think he can beat out DJ in 2021. I also think he can potentially sign with an NFL team as a career Clemson backup. Scouts will know who he is. And for what it’s worth, Brandon Streeter told me on Saturday that Brice has not given the slightest hint that he is thinking about leaving.

I’ll bring you all the news as it breaks, so stay tuned!

As expected, Tee Higgins declared for the NFL Draft. He will be a 1st round pick. Starting DT Nyles Pinckney announced today that he will return next year, as I expected. Unlike this season, that front four is going to be the strength of the defense next year with everyone returning and incoming freshmen DT Bryan Bresee and DE Myles Murphy joining the fray!

Looks like Chase Brice will transfer after all. A source has said that he has entered the transfer portal. He will graduate from Clemson in May, so he'll be able to play elsewhere next fall with 2 years of eligibility left. The Tigers will still have a couple uber-talented backup QB's next season in true freshman DJ Uiagalelei and redshirt freshman Taisun Phommachanh.

Today is the deadline and still no announcement from Etienne, Simmons or Terrell. Not sure if there will be a formal announcement from Simmons, since he said months ago that he will enter the draft, but he's still not listed on NFL draft trackers as having declared.

Still nothing official on Simmons, so I made an inquiry with Clemson to confirm whether he's sent his NFL paperwork in. I'll let you know as soon as I get word!
