Derion Kendrick rumored to be UGA bound

Kirby Smart is turning his biggest weakness on his team, the secondary, into a strength via the transfer portal. Kendrick would be the 3rd DB plucked from the transfer portal by the Dogs in recent months and the most talented. He probably would have been a 1st rounder if he had been able to get his act together at Clemson, but he was a constant discipline problem, having missed games last season, and was dismissed by Dabo just before spring practice. If UGA can sign him and straighten him out off the field, he will be a major asset and would certainly give the Bulldogs an insider advantage in the season opener against the Tigers in Charlotte. Kendrick obviously knows the Clemson offense and defense better than any of the UGA coaches could with any amount of film study.

However, it remains to be seen if Kendrick will even make it to kickoff. He was arrested in Rock Hill in March and charged with gun and drug possession. Arrests have never kept Kirby Smart from getting players to the field on game day, but will Kendrick be able to stay out of any more trouble this summer? If he does play against his former Clemson teammates in September, it should be entertaining to watch. I would expect to see him commit several PI penalties and maybe even get in a fight or two in what he will undoubtedly see as a revenge game.

One ancillary or underlying issue in all of this is the transfer portal becoming free agency as we all knew it would. Teams like UGA are profiting from it and Clemson is the one team that is only being hurt by it because Dabo refuses to accept transfers. He has admitted that there may be a time when he resorts to taking a transfer out of absolute necessity, but just about every other team, like UGA, Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma, is using the portal to strengthen its roster. If not for LSU's use of the portal to get Joe Burrow, for example, Clemson would have a 4th national title and would have gone 30-0 in 2018 and 2019.

It's official. Kendrick will play for UGA next fall. Will be a big storyline going into the season opener and entertaining to watch if Kendrick gets through the summer without being suspended. Incidentally, UGA also added one of the nation's tight ends, a transfer from LSU. Kirby Smart is taking full advantage of the transfer portal and new rule allowing immediate play.
