The change would not occur until at least 2023, and the Tigers' permanent opponents would likely be FSU, GT and NC State. Then they would rotate playing the other 10 teams 5 each year. |

As I expected, the change is official! And as expected, the Tigers will play rivals FSU, GT and NC State every year. The remaining 10 ACC teams will be rotated with the Tigers playing 5 every other year. So if a player stays at a school for 4 years, he will play at every venue in the ACC within his 4-year career. Personally, I think this is a great change. Not only does it put the 2 best teams in the ACC Championship Game, so you won't have an unranked team in the championship, but we will get big games like Clemson vs. Miami or FSU vs. VA Tech every other year instead of once every 5 or 6 years. Under the old system, FSU didn't play in Blacksburg for like 12 years! Under the new system, every school will play at every ACC venue at least once within a 4-year period. I usually don't like change and I am in favor of tradition, but the divisions have only existed for about 15 years. And the biggest rivalries for Clemson within the ACC will still be played every year. The only thing I think the ACC screwed up was assigning Miami and Louisville as annual partners instead of Miami and VA Tech. That's a big break for both Miami and VA Tech because they are both usually strong programs. And it makes way more sense that they should play each other with their Big East history. GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday a new football scheduling model that will go into effect beginning with the 2023 season. The new model is based on a 3-5-5 structure whereby each team will play three primary opponents annually and face the other 10 league teams twice during the four-year cycle, once at home and once on the road. The schedule allows for each team to face all 13 conference opponents home and away at least once during the four-year cycle. The structure was adopted by the league’s athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives earlier today. The new schedule will eliminate the Atlantic and Coastal divisions with all 14 schools competing in one division beginning in 2023. The top two teams based on conference winning percentage will compete in the Subway ACC Football Championship Game on the first Saturday in December at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. In May, the NCAA Division I Council approved the deregulation of the current rule that had limited an individual conference's autonomy to determine their football championship game participants. “The future ACC football scheduling model provides significant enhancements for our schools and conference, with the most important being our student-athletes having the opportunity to play every school both home and away over a four-year period,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “We appreciate the thoughtful discussions within our membership, including the head football coaches and athletic directors. In the end, it was clear this model is in the best interest of our student-athletes, programs and fans, at this time.” A special one-hour edition of The Huddle will air on ACC Network on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss the new scheduling format. The show will be hosted by Drew Carter and feature analysis from Eric Mac Lain, EJ Manuel and Mark Richt.
