No.1 Clemson suffers first loss, 2-1 to No.16 Syracuse (EXCLUSIVE POST-GAME NOONAN INTERVIEW)

The Defending Champs are 6-0 and host their second ranked team of the season tonight at 7:00 on ACCN! They have had some good battles with the Cuse in recent years, including a couple PK shootouts, and the National Champs lost 2-0 at Cuse last season. I'll be at Riggs to bring you live coverage right here!

We're 30 minutes from kickoff, and I'm told the Tigers will be without a couple players due to Covid. They also lost Diop, a starting defender, to injury in their second game against USC Upstate.

Ugh the worst player possible is one of those out with Covid, Sylla, the Tigers' top goal scorer. Grad transfer starter, Waleffe, is also out, presumably with Covid. We are underway! Great crowd here again at Riggs by the way!

GOOOOOALLLL!!! Less than 10 mins into the game, pretty cross from freshman defender Shawn Smart right onto captain Isaiah Reid's foot, who punched it in from point-blank range!

TIGERS LEAD 1-0 IN 1ST.

Good grief, the Tigers give up a ridiculous goal on an empty net. Should have easily been cleared by one of two defenders, Skinner or Lundegard, but the latter deflected the former's attempt to clear it, then Cuse gained possession and put it in the net from close range. Reminded me a lot of the terrible goal given up by Manion against Indiana for the first goal of the season, except this time, it wasn't Manion's fault. I guess he should have stayed home instead of going all the way out of the box to try to clear it with his foot, but it was more of the fault of the defenders. Should have been an easy clear out. Manion has actually made a couple nice saves already.

TIED 1-1 IN 1ST.

Ugh Tigers just missed a golden opportunity on an empty net after a corner. Don't know how that didn't get punched in the net!

Tigers just had a shot go off the post. Chances galore!

That's the end of the half. Tigers should have a 1-0 lead but gave up a bumbling goal. It's been fairly even, though. Of course, it doesn't help that the Tigers are minus 3 starters, including their most important offensive player, Sylla.

TIED 1-1 AT THE HALF.

Ugh Cuse scores two and a half minutes into the 2nd half. He just went right around the Tigers' defender, Lundergarde, who is a regular starter. I don't know why he didn't step up and make a tackle! Just watched as the ball carrier dribbled right by him inside the 10 and score from point blank!

TIGERS TRAIL 2-1 IN 2ND HALF.

Ugh header by Skinner came within inches of finding its way inside the post.

Tigers have had a bunch of chances but unable to cash in. Still trail 2-1 with 15 mins left.

Ugh beautiful cross for a far post header by Reid, but he headed it right to the keeper. Thought that would tie it for sure! Tigers trail 2-1 with 6 mins left.

Time runs out on the Tigers. They had plenty of chances to score but just couldn’t cash them in. Probably would have won if they weren’t missing Sylla, Diop and Waleffe. The former two are All-ACC players! And again, Cause’s first goal was total garbage.

Tiger have to put this one to bed quickly and get healthy. They play PC Monday and have a huge game against No.2 Wake next Saturday here! Too bad tonight ruined the No.1 vs. No.2 rematch that Clemson and Wake have played in the past. Freshman Shawn Smart, who had a beautiful assist on their only goal, was hurt in the 2nd half but appears it’s not serious.

I’ll have my exclusive post-game interview with Noonan shortly.

TIGERS LOSE 2-1.

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 1 Clemson men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night against No. 16 Syracuse (6-0-1, 2-0 ACC)  by a final score of 2-1. After scoring the game’s first goal, the Tigers (6-1-0, 1-1 ACC), playing without starters Ousmane Sylla, Derek Waleffe, and Hamady Diop conceded twice and were unable to bounce back.

The Tigers opened up the scoring in the eighth minute when Shawn Smart made a beautiful overlapping run and received the ball on the right-hand side of the attacking third. He played a perfectly weighted cross to the right foot of Isaiah Reid who one-timed it into the top of the net for his third goal this season.

In the 15th minute, a defensive miscue in front of Clemson’s net led to a Syracuse equalizer. The two top-20 teams traded opportunities for the remainder of the half, but neither squad was able to break through.

As the second half began, Syracuse earned a one-on-one with the keeper just three minutes in and capitalized on the opportunity, putting the Tigers behind for the first time since the season opener against Indiana.

While Clemson was able to create a few chances late, the Syracuse keeper was repeatedly up to the task. Despite putting seven shots on goal to the Orange’s six, Clemson could not manage to level the game and suffered its first home loss under Mike Noonan when scoring the game’s first goal.

“They fought to the last whistle,” said Noonan of his team’s effort. “Unfortunately, we made some mistakes and it cost us tonight. This is a really tough and resilient team and I’m very proud of them.”

Up next, Clemson hosts Presbyterian College on Monday, Sept. 19 at Historic Riggs Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with the match slated to stream on ACCNX.
