OFFICIAL SUNDAY SUPER REGIONAL THREAD: NO.6 CLEMSON vs. Florida

CUTrevor 2024-06-09 11:48:41

The Tigers suffered their first NCAA Tournament loss yesterday 10-7, thanks to a 7-run 5th by the Gators, and face elimination today. It started with the 3-run HR by All-American Jac Caglianone, his 32nd of the season, which gave them their first lead of the game. He will be on the mound today against freshman Aidan Knaak, the All-ACC First Teamer.

Clemson is the only team from the ACC to lose in the Supers! In fact, the ACC has sent the first 3 teams to Omaha in FSU, UNC and UVA, and NC State pounded UGA 18-1 in Athens yesterday.

First pitch is at 2:30 on ESPN, and Chris and I will have live coverage from DKS right here!

Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:10:30

I think it is imperative that the Tigers get some runs in the top of this 1st inning and try to rattle Cagliagnone if they want to have a chance to win this ballgame. Knaak has to be himself . Florida is going to score but the Tigers can minimize the damage and not give up the big inning. The Tigers are the visiting team today (not sure I agree with that). Virginia, UNC, and FSU have all advanced to Omaha. NC State trails Georgia 8-0. The Tigers must win today or the season is done.

CUTrevor 2024-06-09 13:11:46

We have a uniform reversal today with the Tigers wearing Purple and the Gators wearing orange. Also, the Tigers are batting first today, which is a big disadvantage with all the walk-offs we've seen in this tournament.

The wind is blowing a little more than it was yesterday, right to left right now. We saw a bunch of HR's yesterday and might see more today!

Reply
Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:30:37

Yesterday the wind was blowing from left to rigth, today the flags are flying right to left but the wind underneath the awning here along the 3rd base side, is blowing in our face so I guess the best way to describe the wind would be swirling lol

Reply
CUTrevor 2024-06-09 13:40:28

Swirling winds are not unusual here, but the most important thing is what those flags in center field are doing! We should see a couple bombs in the grand stands in left unless the winds change.

WRIGHT 2-OUT DOUBLE!! It was hit deep to left, and I thought it might go out at first because of what I just said about the wind. RISP with 2 outs for Cannarella, who was hitless yesterday with a walk.

Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:44:52

I have to be honest sitting out here in the elements, if you hit one out today and the wind is blowing in like it is right now, that means you are going to have to hit it through 8-10 maybe even gusting to 12-15 mph you are going to have to smash the ball to get it out today

Ugh Knaak hits the leadoff man on the first pitch!

Reply
CUTrevor 2024-06-09 13:47:04

Holy cow next batter, Caglianone, crushes one over the batter's eye in center! Cannarella actually started in on it but quickly realized it was a goner. What power! The two-way star who's pitching today started the 7s-run 5th with his 32nd HR yesterday, giving the Gators their first lead of the game. He has now tied his own Florida record for HR's in a season and is one behind the Florida career record.

Worst start possible for Tigers. They trail 2-0.

Reply
Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:48:03

Seriously, that was the weakest pitching wedge shot I have ever seen and Caglianone lifted it over the batters eye. Good grief, I am not pitching to him the rest of the day!

CRIGHTON 2-OUT DOUBLE!! RISP for freshman DH Nawrocki, making his first appearance this weekend.

Reply
CUTrevor 2024-06-09 13:57:34

Wow, Nawrocki check swing and then body checks Cagliagnone on the tag, almost starting a bench-clearing brawl!

The shove by the freshman was perfectly acceptable because Cags was blocking the base path, but he said something to Cags after the push, and Cags got in his face and shoved him back with more words. The umps are considering ejecting Cags! That would completely turn this series on its head. He would be out tomorrow as well!

Reply
Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:57:48

Here we are again with runners on scoring position for the 2nd inning and we have a altercation and yes, Cagliagnone needs to be ejected right here.

Reply
Thexoach 2024-06-09 13:58:50

The umpires are reviewing it and the flip side on this is it very well may fire DKS stadium and this baseball team up because so far, it has been quiet

I would be VERY surprised if they toss Cags here. Unless he said something really bad. Based on the video, he should not be ejected.

Reply
CUTrevor 2024-06-09 14:00:57

You see shoves and shoves back in basketball all the time, and it's not even a technical foul, let alone an ejection. But you never know what was said.

Reply
Thexoach 2024-06-09 14:01:38

If they don't toss Cagliagnone out, this baseball game becomes a free for all. I am sorry but if you can eject Cannarella last year for words in the Tennessee game, that wasn't heard, the this warrants an ejection. Cagliagnone threw a punch/shove

Also, who knows maybe the NCAA will decide to use this to send a message and make a big story.

I predicted that Taylor might DH today instead of Nawrocki. I wonder if he would have reacted the same way! Maybe not coming off an injury.

I'll say this it tells us a lot about Nawrocki's personality, body checking the 6'5, 250-pound All-American who looks like an NFL tight end!

Crighton was on 2nd he hit the double. As I stated this has now became a free for all baseball game, anything goes. The one thing it has done, has ignighted this crowd and its only going to get nastier as the game goes on

Reply
CUTrevor 2024-06-09 14:15:14

None of us were focused on Crighton because he was almost at 3rd base when all this started, but he ran all the way to the fracous, did some yelling and touched one of the umps on the shoulder. It was just a touch, but that's all it takes! Also, the umps told Bakich that Crighton broke the rules by altering his patch back to the dugout to get involved in the scrum. That makes no sense because the inning was officially over, and I don't believe there is a rule about where you can and can't go after an inning ends, other than the opponent's dugout obviosuy.

Crighton ran out on the field and tried to get in the ump's face after the ejection, clearly yelling "F you" at him.

That was a 19-minute delay here in the 2nd! Crighton is out for the rest of the Super.

I don't know what else to say about Cannarella. 0-10 and a line shot that brought the short stop out of his shoes to catch and he delivered a RBI shot into right field after that then delivered the 3-run bomb to tie this game up. The Tigers have put runs on the board and the Gators have responded, lets see if this can change and get out of the bottom of the 9th without giving up any runs.

Wow, Sully came out to talk to the home plate ump and make him check the bill of Gordon's cap for a foreign substance! A lot of pitchers have cheated that way, but Gordon's cap is clean, and the crowd let the ump hear it. I guess that's a sign of respect that Gordon has been that tough to hit! And Sully was a pitching coach here!

Thexoach 2024-06-09 17:11:38

Austin Gordon has been spectacular this year when he has had to come in and give more than his normal outing as a closer. If he can cap this off and the Tigers find a way to win, it would be incredible

Barlow makes his first appearance of the Super to start the 11th. What a job by Gordon! He had 10 K's, twice as many as Knaak, in 4 innings and threw 4 more pitches. If not for the 2-out HR, one of the greatest relief performances I've ever seen.

Good grief Barlow walks another on 4 pitches. 2 on with 2 outs. That was a huge walk because it flips the lineup and ensures Caglianone will get an at bat next inning! Even if they get this batter out, Cags will be the 3rd batter in the 12th.

New pitcher for Gators. This is a tough call whether to swing away on a 2-0 count as good a hitter as Bissetta is! I just asked Brian if Bissetta has had a sac bunt all season. Don't think he had.

A missed opportunity there with a 3-1 count and you try to lay down a bunt to make it 3-2 and then you have no choice but to swing away and hit into a double play. Momentum killer right there. The situation was a runner on first with no outs.

Unbelievable. So I am told by ESPN sitting beside me that Mathes was NOT ejected, but Bakich thought he was. Leggett was ejected for coming out of the dugout, and then Bakich was ejected for yelling at the umps for that. The craziest part is that nothing would have happened if they didn't think Mathes was ejected in the first place!

CRAZIEST. GAME. EVER. And it's also the 13th inning for those of you who are superstitious! The worst of it is that Bakich and Leggett are both suspended for the next 2 games! That means tomorrow and the first game in Omaha if the Tigers make it. Crighton is already out tomorrow as well!

Apparently there is a somewhat new NCAA rule that prohibits ejected coaches from participating in post-game press conferences, so we only got Wright, Obertop and Gordon just now. Probably the weirdest press conference in my 10 years in the media. I guess Bellanger and the other assistant coaches declined to speak as well.

Sully told me that "The Cannarella Catch," as I'm calling it, "floored" him. He said it was one of the greatest plays he's ever seen. He also said that the environment at DKS this weekend was greater than anything he remembered from his 9 years here under Leggett.

I will have a statement from the NCAA regarding the Bakich and Leggett ejections for you in a bit. My understanding is that they will both be suspended for the first two games of next season, which ordinarily would be against a lesser opponent, but next season they open at the Rangers' stadium in Texas along with 5 other Power Five teams.

I'll have the videos posted shortly!

Both Statements From Randy Bruns, NCAA Baseball Secretary-Rules Editor:

Clemson student-athlete (#3) who was on second base at the time of the play which resulted in a possible altercation near first base was ejected from the game for leaving his position on the field because he went to the site of the potential altercation.  Members of both teams were warned against any further unsportsmanlike conduct and if there are any issues the remainder of the game this would also result in an ejection for any given student-athlete, coach, or team personnel.  Clemson's student-athlete who was ejected will also be suspended per NCAA baseball playing rules (Rule 2-26) for a game tomorrow (if a game three is necessary).

---

As an additional note as it relates to the last part of the Florida-Clemson game, I have not received any specific details but the rules that relate to the ejections at the end of the game are as follows:

A head coach who is ejected but then immediately stops arguing and leaves the field is not suspended per Rule 2-26. However, per Rule 5-15-a-4, any team personnel who has been ejected and continues to argue or continues to excessively express themselves with prolonged actions or offensive language is suspended for 2 additional games.

Team personnel other than the head coach (such as an assistant coach or player) who are ejected also serve a one-game suspension per Rule 2-26-f.
