Shelton Mitchell out again with the concussion. Hokies have won 3 of their last 4, including at UVA, and are in Lundardi's last four in for the NCAA.

DeVoe misses his first 3. Another offensive rebound by Sims. Need DeVoe to have a big game tonight after going 1-11 for just 3 points against Duke!

Eli scores again after a third offensive rebound already by the Tigers! He has all 4 points, and they lead by 2.

Ugh Robinson hits his first shot from 3. That was a concern coming in and one of my questions for Brownell yesterday. Tech is #1 in the ACC in 3-point percentage, and the Tigers allowed Duke to shoot 46% from 3 including a couple fouls out there. Robinson is the Hokies' leading scorer, and he's been very hot over the last month or so. He was 3-3 from 3 in their last game, a trouncing of GT in Atlanta.

Tigers trail by one.

DeVoe travels. That was my question number two for Brownell. Turnovers killed the Tigers in both of those close losses. Definitely should have beaten FSU but had a season-high 21 turnovers, including 16 after halftime.

Tigers screwed on a BS call by the ref, saying Reed was out of bounds. He was not. Gives the Hokies a chance for the last shot of the half.

Reply
CUTrevor 2018-02-21 18:50:47

And of course the crap call by the refs cost the Tigers the halftime lead. Robinson hits a shot at the buzzer to put Tech up one. Could be a 4-point swing on the botched call.

TIGERS TRAIL 25-24 AT THE HALF.

Reply
CUTrevor 2018-02-21 19:11:06

DeVoe air balls a 3. Ice cold. He needs to use his ability to penetrate and try to get an easy layup or a foul to see the ball go through the basket and break this funk he's in. He's trying to get out of it shooting 3's, and that's not the way to go.

Tigers lose by 7. They were just 11-36 from 3 and 3-10 from the free throw line! Free throws alone cost them the game, even without Mitchell. DeVoe was just 3-9 for 8 points. Sensational double-double for Reed, scoring almost half the Tigers' points with a career-high 28 and 10 rebounds. He tied the Clemson record with eight 3's!

That drops the Tigers to 9-6 in a tie with VT in the ACC standings, so as it stands today the Tigers would not get the double-bye in the ACC Tourney. That damn concussion for Mitchell with 9 seconds left in overtime cost the Tigers the last 2 games and possibly a double-bye!

Imagine if they had committed one less turnover in Tallahassee and won in regulation (they never trailed in regulation, and FSU tied it on a difficult shot just before the buzzer). Mitchell wouldn't have been injured, and the Tigers would have gone on to beat Duke and VT, sitting at a school record 7 straight ACC wins and top 10 in the nation! What might have been...

CUTrevor 2018-02-21 20:15:17

The Tigers should be able to rebound at home on Saturday against GT and then get FSU at home and Cuse on the road to finish the regular season. Let's hope Mitchell plays Saturday with no lingering effects and DeVoe gets out of his rut! If so, the Tigers could easily win their last 3 and secure a double-bye in the ACC Tourney.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Clemson University men’s basketball dropped its third consecutive contest of the season on the road at Virginia Tech, 65-58, on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (20-7, 9-6 ACC) held the Hokies (20-8, 9-6 ACC) to its lowest shooting percentage of the season. Virginia Tech came into the contest fourth in the country with a 51.1 percentage and Clemson’s defense held them to just 34.5 percent on Wednesday.

Marcquise Reed carried the Tiger offense with a career-best 28 points and also 10 rebounds on the night. It’s Reed’s third double-double of the season and second achieved with rebounds. The redshirt-junior made a career-high eight 3-pointers – tying the Clemson program record. The last Tiger to make that many in a game was K.C. Rivers on Feb. 7, 2008 at Virginia.

Elijah Thomas posted his eighth double-double of the season and the 10th of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds – giving him back-to-back double-doubles for the second time this season.

Clemson and Virginia Tech played the entire first stanza without either team building more than a three-point lead. The Hokies took a low-scoring 26-25 lead into halftime.

The Tigers engineered a 13-5 run to take a four-point lead- its largest of the game – at 38-34 with 13:43 left.

However, the Hokies would orchestrate a 25-7 run over the next 11:10 of regulation to build a game-high 14 point advantage.

Clemson battled back and closed to within just five points on the heels of an 8-2 run capped by a Gabe DeVoe three, but it wasn’t ultimately enough.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24when it hosts Georgia Tech and celebrates Senior Day. The game is slated for 3 p.m.

Notes: Clemson dropped its third consecutive game of the season … Clemson’s defense held Virginia Tech (fourth-best shooting percentage in the country entering the game) to its lowest percentage of the season (34.5) … Marcquise Reed set a new career-best with 28 points and made a career-high eight 3-pointers … the eight threes tied a program record and made Reed the first to accomplish that feat since K.C. Rivers on Feb. 7, 2008 at Virginia … with 10 rebounds it served as Reed’s third career double-double and second achieved with rebounds … Elijah Thomas posted his eighth double-double of the season and 10th of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds … it gives Thomas back-to-back double-doubles for the second time this season … with 11 threes, Clemson has now made 10+ 3-pointers in 11 games this season.
