The only other such matchup came at the end of the 1992 season, when three-time Super Bowl head coach Bill Walsh led Stanford against two-time national championship head coach Joe Paterno’s Penn State squad in the 1993 Blockbuster Bowl.
The game was Swinney’s 300th on staff at Clemson including both his time as an assistant coach and head coach. Swinney became the third member of Clemson's 300-game coaching club. College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard coached 380 career games (85 as an assistant, 295 as a head coach) at Clemson, not including an additional 44 games he served in Clemson's athletic administration. One of Howard's key lieutenants, Bob Jones, served on Clemson's football staff for 343 games from 1931-69 minus four years of decorated service in World War II.

Running back Adam Randall rushed eight times for 30 yards and caught four passes for a career-high 73 yards and a career-high two receiving touchdowns.
