CLEMSON, SC - The Lady Tigers swept their 4 games in the Clemson Classic over the weekend to open their home slate and cruised to a 6-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st when Russ, Clark and Cagle walked to load the bases with no outs, and Guimbarda hit a sac fly. She went on a tear over the weekend, going 6-14 with a HR, 2 doubles and 7 RBI's, and she wasn't done with that RBI in the 1st. The Tigers didn't do any more damage in the 1st, but they broke the game open in the 3rd when Cagle and Guimbarda hit back-to-back homers to make it 5-0. Cagle drove in 3 with her HR, and it was Guimbarda's 4th HR in the past 11 days. Guimbarda doubled for her 3rd RBI the next inning, and that was more than the Tigers would need.
All of the Tigers' top 4 starting pitchers saw action in the game. Cagle was the starter in the circle, but Rittman brought Spencer in to pitch the 3rd and 4th, Thompson for the 5th and 6th with McCubbin closing in the 7th. The pitchers combined for 13 strike outs. Cagle actually struck out 4 in the 1st, but one of them reached base on a wild third strike. She had 6 K's in her 2 innings pitched.
It was a nice tune-up for the pitchers, who will surely be tested this weekend when they host No.6 VA Tech to begin ACC play. The Tigers have won 21 straight at home, with their last loss coming to Duke last season in a split 4-game series. We'll see if they can keep it going against the Hokies.
