The Tigers and Gamecocks normally play just before Christmas, but this season, the Tigers would have to play a tough environment for just their second game of the season with a bunch of young players and one new transfer. Added to that, PJ Hall is just coming off rehab after missing the entire off-season. He didn't start, but he did make his season debut and scored 15 points in just 22 minutes. Turnovers did the Tigers in, however. They committed 10 turnovers in the first half and another on the opening possession of the first half. However, they finally settled in and played much better in the second half, overcoming a 9-point halftime deficit on the road to tie the game with 7 seconds left. Unfortunately, Chico Carter hit an extremely difficult turnaround jumper with 0.9 seconds left to win the game for the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks also made ten 3-pointers to the Tigers' 7, but it was the sloppy play in the first half that ultimately doomed the Tigers. Hunter Tyson and Chase Hunter, who combined for 42 points in the Tigers' opener, had just 7 combined points in the first half, but they finished with 10 and 13, respectively.
Despite the outcome, I thought it was a good second-half effort by the Tigers. Again, it was a tough situation to go into that environment with just one game under a new team's belt. If the game had been in Littlejohn or a month later in the season as usual, I believe the Tigers would have won comfortably. I'm not making excuses, just calling it as I see it, and I really like this team if they can stay healthy!
I'll have Brownell's post-game interview posted in a bit.
