In the midst of a historic season and the Tigers' first-ever 7-0 start to ACC play, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and sure enough, Chase Hunter apparently injured his foot at the end of the Duke game and would miss Tuesday night's game at Wake. Brownell has had horrific luck with injuries his whole career at Clemson, including last season. They successfully navigated the loss of starter Alex Hemenway to go 7-0 in the ACC and achieve their first ranking in two years, but now they've lost their starting point guard and one of their leading scorers. Redshirt freshman Josh Beadle made his first career start at point guard, and the Tigers actually scored more than enough points to win the game, but it was ironically their defense that let them down, giving up 48 first-half points to the Deacs, who they blew out in Littlejohn a month ago. The Tigers fought hard throughout, tying Wake in second-half points scored, and they actually cut the lead to 6 late in the game but were unable to get enough stops for the comeback. Hall scored 22, Tyson 19 and Galloway 16 to lead the Tigers. Freshman Chauncey Wiggins made his first three career 3-pointers, including a 4-point play, finishing with 10 points off the bench.
The Tigers are still alone in 1st place atop the ACC standings at 7-1 but have a tough home game on Saturday against VA Tech, which will have Hunter Cattoor back in the lineup. It will be an even tougher game if Chase Hunter is still unable to play.
The post-game interview with Brownell is below.
