CLEMSON, SC - Saturday was a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional pitchers' duel between National Player of the Year front-runner Valerie Cagle and SEC Pitcher of the Year Maddie Penta, won 1-0 by Clemson, and I was expecting another low-scoring affair. It was just that for the most part, but the host Tigers broke the scoreless tie with a 2-out HR by Clark in the 3rd. Then the flood gates opened with a 2-out rally in the 5th. Hyatt starting things off with a one-out single. Clark was hit by a pitch with 2 outs and stole 2nd, giving them runners on 2nd and 3rd. Miklesh, who had a couple clutch hits in the 2-1 win over UNC in the ACC Tournament, came through again with a 2-out, 2-run single, and Cagle followed that with her 19th HR of the season. Cagle's homer chased SEC Pitcher of the Year Maddie Penta out of the game, and the Tigers weren't done yet. Jacobsen singled and stole second, leading to a 2-out RBI single by Logoleo to make it 6-0. The Tigers added a run for good measure in the 6th with a leadoff double by Vieira, who made her return this weekend after a month-long arm injury, and an RBI single by Davenport.

It was Cagle's 8th shutout of the season, tying her for 8th-most in the nation. Her 19th HR tied her for 7th-most. The Tigers are now in the catbird seat, awaiting the winner of the loser's bracket, and just have to win one of their next two to advance to their second straight NCAA Super Regional! They are 5-0 all-time as a regional host.
