What a historic win, and just what the Tigers needed after 3 gut-wrenching losses that they should have won! I wore my lucky shirt for the first time ever during a Clemson game for my first live broadcast on PSF, and it worked! I'm going to have to wear this shirt for the rest of the season now.
The Tigers would have won by 7, but RJ Davis banked a 3 at the buzzer. What a performance by the Tigers, especially in the first half, building a 16-point lead with 2:30 left! And then to withstand the run by the Heels in the 2nd half with the crowd behind them and all the pressure after the game was tied at 70. The Tigers actually never trailed once in the game! Hall was brilliant, scoring 25 points with four 3-pointers. Girard was 5-10 from the arc for 21 points.
Second win ever in Chapel Hill, and over the No.3 ranked team that just beat No.7 Duke comfortably 3 nights ago! The first win there, of course, was in overtime in 2019 when I was in New Orleans covering the football national championship along with everyone else in the media. So after 110 years without a win in Chapel Hill, Brownell has now won there twice in the last 4 years! And these weren't down seasons for the Heels by any means. Take that, Brownell haters!
This is a HUGE win that can turn the whole season around and hopefully be a spring board for a great run in the ACC and beyond. The players' confidence has to be through the roof right now! They should have beaten the Heels TWICE, should have beaten a red-hot UVA team and would have won AT Duke if the refs hadn't stolen it. I said preseason that this is a top 15 team if they stay healthy, and I never budged from that, even after all the ACC losses. Hopefully they can build on this momentum, and their record will start to reflect how good they are. If they play defense like they did tonight, they are going to be a tough team to beat, as good as they are offensively!
They've gotta play like this on Saturday at Cuse to keep it going, though. The Tigers haven't won consecutive games yet in ACC play. It's going to be a fun homecoming for Girard in the dome! Be sure to check out the recording of my very first live broadcast on the PSF app! I will do my second broadcast on Saturday, and my buddy Dave, who's hilarious and very entertaining, will be my co-host. I picked the right game for my first broadcast! Must have been fate...
I'll have my post-game interview with Brownell and highlights posted shortly!
