As absolutely bleak as things looked in Clemson on Saturday, the Tigers were thrown a lifeline by the Orange! Thanks to a 42-38 upset of Miami by Syracuse, the Tigers will play SMU in Charlotte for an ACC Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff! Dabo texted me shortly after: "Never say never in college football." That sums it up! What a roller coaster of emotions for the team and fans. It looked like the Gamecocks' last-minute comeback win in Death Valley had deprived the Tigers of a playoff spot for the second time in three years, but now everything is still on the table. Make no mistake, the loss to the Gamecocks is still going to stick in everyone's crawl for a long time, but it will be a much easier pill to swallow if the Tigers bounce back to win the ACC Championship and make the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The Tigers would also likely receive a top-4 seed and a bye in the first round! SMU has been a great team all season, losing only to BYU, but the Tigers will have an enormous crowd advantage in Charlotte, where they are 8-0 in ACC Championship Games!
Welcome to the new era of college football, folks. Absolute whackiness right up to the finish line. Rivalry weekend began with Georgia Tech pulling off the upset of the season against Georgia in Athens, leading the entire game until the final minute of regulation and losing in 8 overtimes. Almost as shocking was Ohio State's home loss to unranked Michigan, and then there were the crazy games in Clemson and Syracuse. This season has proven that just about any team can lose to any team in a given week--even at the very top of the rankings--so if the Tigers can just punch their ticket to the playoff, they have about as good a chance to win it all as anyone. When they play their best for four quarters, I believe they can beat anyone, and Dabo has more playoff experience than any other active coach.
Tune in here on Sunday for my ACC Championship Zoom call with Dabo and Rhett Lashlee, as well as my normal Sunday evening Zoom call with Dabo! CU in Charlotte!
