CHARLOTTE, NC - The Tigers have begun their ACC Tournament revenge tour! They lost at Wake during their four-game losing streak last month but took care of the Deacs in Charlotte on Wednesday night. The Deacs came in with momentum, having beaten the Hokies in overtime on Tuesday, but the Tigers played much better than they did in Winston-Salem last month. They led by 20 points at one point, and the Deacs battled to make it close at the end. Godfrey missed the front end of three straight one-and-one's, making Clemson fans a little anxious, but Dillon Hunter and Butta Johnson were clutch at the free throw line to put the game away.
The bad news is that starting center Carter Welling, the Tigers' second-leading scorer and leading shot-blocker, left the game in the first half with what looked like a bad knee injury, possibly a torn ACL. The Tigers' bench was outstanding all night, though, and Nick Davidson and Chase Thompson stepped up to fill the void left by Welling.
The Tigers will tip off at 9:30 on Thursday in a rematch with the Heels, who they lost to in Chapel Hill by 4 points a week ago. I'll get you an injury update on Welling, but the Tigers will be lucky to get him back at all for the NCAA Tournament.
