CLEMSON, SC - The Tigers lost their 5th straight and 2nd straight heartbreaker in game 1 on Friday. They led Duke 8-7 with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 9th, but a weak single off Owen Griffith tied the game and a double off Spiers won it for the Devils. The Tigers led most of the game. Duke took the lead twice, and both times the Tigers re-took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. However, they were unable to pull that off when it counted, going 1-2-3 with their top 3 hitters, Hall, Davidson and Byrd, in the 9th.
Hall started in center for Teo, who suffered an eye injury in practice and will be out all weekend. Hall homered twice and stole home in the 7th inning to tie the game. Once again, it was walks and a big error that cost the Tigers the game, just like the 20-inning 3-2 loss at No.4 UGA on Tuesday. The Tigers have dropped from 11-3 to 11-8 in the ACC. Hennessy will get the start on the mound in game 2 on Saturday. Monte told us that Mat Clark, who suffered his first loss of the season at FSU last week, has a sore arm.
Post-game interviews with Monte, Hall and Wilkie are below.
