CLEMSON ASSISTANT COACH STEVE SMITH DISMISSED AFTER BEING IMPLICATED IN FBI INVESTIGATION

CLEMSON, SC - Clemson Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Steve Smith was recently implicated in the case going on in New York with the FBI investigating payments to coaches and players by a sports agent. Former Clemson Merl Code has also been implicated. I don’t believe Smith has been found guilty of anything yet, but he had made suspicious statements related to the recruitment of Zion Williamson according to the government witness that were inferred to suggest payment to Williamson's father. Smith’s contract was up for renewal on April 30, and Clemson opted not to renew it. Any alleged impropriety involving Smith apparently has not been attributed to Brad Brownell or anyone else in the Clemson Athletic Department.
STATEMENT FROM CLEMSON ATHLETICS
Clemson Athletics has not renewed the contract of assistant men’s basketball coach Steve Smith, which expired on April 30, 2019.
STATEMENT FROM BRAD BROWNELL
I support the decision not to renew Steve Smith’s contract.
