We spoke with Jeff Scott, Brent Venables, Trevor Lawrence, Jackson Carman, Ruke Orhorhoro, Mike Jones, Jr. and Sheridan Jones on Monday to discuss the Wofford win and Saturday's game against NC State in Raleigh. We also spoke with Brad Brownell to preview Tuesday night's season and ACC opener against Virginia Tech. You can watch that at the link below.
Trevor talked about spreading the ball around evenly among their many offensive weapons and also Etienne's improvement as a pass-catcher. He said he knows the history against NC State in Raleigh and all the close games the Tigers have had there.
Jeff Scott and Brent Venables were both asked about the distractions of head coaching opportunities in the wake of Willie Taggart's dismissal at Florida State yesterday. Venables said all he is thinking about is NC State. Jeff Scott said that if and when something is presented to him as a serious opportunity, he will let Dabo know about it and advise him accordingly. Scott went on to talk about what a special situation he and all three of the coordinators have at Clemson, and he does not take that for granted. He and the other coordinators are very happy where they are, and it would take a very, very special head coaching job for any of them to leave, and that may still be years away. I've been saying for five years that Venables isn't leaving Clemson anytime soon, and I believe that now more than ever with his son Jake just starting to come into his own and another son on the way.
In addition to redshirt freshman Mike Jones, Jr., who is always a good interview, we spoke to true freshmen Ruke and Sheridan Jones for the first time, and they both did a great job. Ruke is extremely well-spoken and confident for such a young guy, and Sheridan is a communications major, so he is well-spoken as well. Ruke is a particularly interesting guy, having grown up in Nigeria and never having played organized football until the 11th grade in Michigan. I asked him about how his recruitment unfolded, and he told us a funny story about that. Watch that response and all the interviews below!
