CLEMSON, SC - The news we all dreaded hearing since the season began came down like a bombshell on Thursday evening, as Clemson announced that Heisman front-runner Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19. He has mild symptoms and is in isolation according to Dabo and will obviously be unavailable for Saturday's game against BC. It is also highly likely that Trevor will miss the big top-5 showdown at Notre Dame (in 9 days) as well. Fortunately, the Tigers have a bye after that before playing at FSU. Assuming freshman QB DJ Uiagalelei does not also test positive, he will get the start on Saturday against Boston College.
Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney provided the following update this evening on quarterback Trevor Lawrence:
“Trevor has authorized us this evening to announce that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in isolation. He is doing well with mild symptoms but will not be available for this week’s game against Boston College. While we certainly will miss Trevor, this is an opportunity for other guys to step up and we’re excited about competing against a very good BC team on Saturday. Go Tigers.”
Let's just hope the Tigers' entire QB room doesn't get it like we saw with Wisconsin! Assuming he's negative, DJ will make his first start on Saturday, and we'll see what he's made of. He's shown some glimpses in his limited playing time but hasn't exactly set the world on fire. He'll have plenty of time to get in a rhythm this time, though!
If anything happens to DJ, I'm not sure if Taisun will be able to play or not. He's been practicing with the broken bone in his left, non-throwing hand, but Dabo may feel more comfortable with freshman walk-on Hunter Helms, who played very well at Tech, throwing two touchdown passes. After him, it's Will Spiers!
